Absolutely no practice runs on the course will be allowed on race day.
You must be wearing the lift ticket from the team bag in order to board the chair lift. The last rest room is at the top of chair 2 (top of Mission Ridge), before you head down to the start area. Hang onto your race number, because racers will be required to have a race number in order to access the fruit and cookie aid station in the finish area. Alpine skiers will wear a race number high on chest and low on the back. Numbers must be visible at all times.
The Nordic to Alpine exchange features a 75-100 yard run (in ski boots, carrying skis and poles) uphill by the alpine team member (teams) before the racer puts on skis. There is no uphill run for Iron, tandem or adventure duo competitors.
The Alpine leg for Iron Competitors begins at the end of the Nordic leg. The Alpine leg utilizes various ski runs and ends near the rope tow on the Bunny Hill, depending on conditions on race day. The course is entirely groomed and features giant slalom and downhill gates, but is not considered a high speed course. The exact runs will be determined based on snow conditions.
Be prepared and know which chute to take:
At the end of your run, there are TWO chutes- one for teams (pink, blue and orange numbers) and one for iron skiers (green and white numbers). Don't lose time - enter the correct chute! TEAM skiers bear to the RIGHT as you enter the transition zone. Team skiers will traverse across the top of the rope tow area, make a short uphill climb, and then turn and drop down to meet your runner for the handoff. IRON and TANDEM skiers bear to the LEFT as you enter the transition zone. There is a flat area for changing your gear. Tandem team members may make their handoff in this area as well.
Alpine ski equipment is required together with safety straps or ski brakes. Competitors will be allowed to use a snowboard for the Alpine Leg, but must follow the same rules as downhill skiers. Gloves are often worn for carrying skis on the uphill run.
Many skiers will be on the course at the same time and caution is required.
Gate keepers will maintain and marshal the Alpine Course and any gate missed must be re-entered and passed through or a time penalty will be assessed.
Iron and Tandem support team members: Check at the ski leg information table at Foothills Middle School on Friday night before the race to find out the recommended route to come down the mountain when you are finished. Cross country skiers and walkers should not come down the downhill race route.
Iron Division and Tandem team competitors who are transporting both Alpine and Nordic boots and skis on the chair lift, should wear their Alpine gear and carry their Nordic gear so that they can get on and off the lifts in the most efficient manner. No foot-loaders on the chair.
Ridge to River has had a tradition of good weather. However, participants who begin or end in the Mission Ridge area should be prepared for cold weather.
Mission Ridge Lodge will be open for breakfast at 7:00 AM on race morning!
